MBA in Tourism – The future!

Tourism Industry is the largest service industry with a contribution of 6.23% to the national GDP and 8.7 % of the total employment in India The tourism industry in India generated about 100 US$ billion in 2008 and that is expected to increase to US$275.5 billion by 2018 at a 9.4% annual growth rate (IBEF report). India’s tourism industry is experiencing a strong period of growth, because of economic growth the India’s middle class is driving tourism demand. Both directly and indirectly the tourism in India has created jobs in a variety related sectors. A new growth sector is Medical Tourism. It is currently growing at around 30% per annum. Medical tourist arrivals are expected to reach one million soon.

With so much potential in Tourism sector, Institute of Management Studies, Ghaziabad offers a two years full time Post Graduate Diploma in Management – Tourism Management equivalent to MTM (Masters in Tourism Management) approved by AICTE. The course is divided into six trimesters covering 49 Subjects. The programme aims to provide the much needed tourism professional at managerial levels. Thus a number of subjects related to management : Quantitative Techniques, Organizational Behaviour, Human Resources Management, Marketing Management, Financial Management, Logistic & Supply chain Management, Managerial Economics, Managerial Communication, strategic Management, Research Methods in Business are offered in combination with Tourism Management Subjects.

PGDM – TM offers  dual specialization in Marketing  and choice of discipline in Tourism Management. The specializations in Tourism management are as follows : Travel Agency Management, Airlines Management, Destination Planning and Management, Hotel Management & medical Tourism.

To groom the students IMS is unique in offering special modules in Personal and Professional skills and Foreign Language. The pedagogy emphasizes on the development of students skills and knowledge and to apply learnt management theories and concepts according to industry requirements. The teaching methods involve series of lectures, case studies, group discussions, workshops, seminars, role-play, real life simulation exercises, industrial visits etc. The trust is on involving the students in learning and helping them to relate the concepts to business requirements.

Summer Internship

 At the end of the first year the students are required to undergo training in the industry for a period of about 8 weeks. This gives them an opportunity to learn through practical experiences. Each student is assigned a faculty guide who supervises the summer project undertaken by the student. At the end of the training period students are required to submit a written project report which is evaluated by a panel of experts this is a compulsory component of curriculum and is designed to provide students an exposure to organizational working and to develop an understanding of tourism ealities.

Programme is best suited for anyone who is creative, innovative and bubbling with ideas. Innovation is the need of the hour and tourism industry is looking forward to recruit professionals who can think out of the box.

An applicant should have a minimum of three years Bachelor Degree or equivalent in any discipline recognized by UGC/AICTE. Candidates appearing for the final examinations for the Bachelors Degree (or equitant examination) can also apply subject to furnishing evidence to that effect latest by 30th Oct, 2012.  Applicants must have CAT/MAT/GMAT/ATMA score.

Admission Process

  A candidate has to apply for admission to IMS Ghaziabad on the prescribed application form (available on www.ims-ghaziabad.ac.in). Candidates will be initially short listed on the basis of their academics and their CAT/MAT/GMAT/ATMA score. Shortlisted candidates will be called for the comprehensive evaluation. The evaluation process includes :

–          Written Expression test

–          Group Discussion

–          Personal Interview

–          Director Assessment

Placement Opportunities

Students after pursuing this course can get placements into Travel Agencies ( KUONI, Cox and Kings, American Express, SOTC, Thomas Cook, Le Passage to India), online travel agencies ( Make my trip .com, yatra.com), Hotels ( 5* AND 4*), Resorts, Embassies, Event Management Companies, Airlines, State Tourism Development Corporations, Department of Tourism)

Alumni of the programme are happily climbing up the corporate ladder and leaving a mark on the Tourism Industry.
